Once a Month: Use Ccleaner to clean up your hard drive. |
The pros use it. You should too! First, download it here. Then install it. (When installing, it will ask you to install shortcut links everywhere, and Yahoo! toolbar. You don't need that stuff. 2. On the left side Cleaner should be highlighted. 4. Press the Run Cleaner button. 5. Let run for a couple minutes. NEXT 6. On the left side, click the Registry button. 7. Press Scan for Issues button. Takes 30 seconds. 8. When the small window appears select Fix Selected Issues. 9. Repeat steps 6 - 8 until no items appear. |

Once a Month: Defragment your hard disk (This applies to Windows XP. Vista and 7 does this automatically.) |
If you have Windows XP, this is not automatically done for you like Windows Vista or Windows 7 does. Through time, your files/folders/data become split into pieces and placed in areas on your hard drive where they will fit nicely. Your computer becomes slower because it has to retrieve all the split pieces placed at the different locations. As you can imagine, this is not efficient. So, you defragment! It's real simple and feels good when you are done. 4. Click the Tools tab on the top of the window that popped up. 5. Select Defrag Now. 6. Click Defragment. (This may take from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the level of severity, so LET IT RUN OVERNIGHT!) |
